Wouldn’t it be nice, if there was some cookbook, and/ or, magic elixir, for becoming the best – possible leader? After, over four decades of personal involvement, in nearly, all areas, related to leading, I fully realize and understand, such a methodology, doesn’t exist, but, in nearly all of the hundreds of leadership training programs, in those years, I have discussed, an approach to being a better leader! Doing so, takes a significant amount of dedication, commitment, discipline, training, skills, positive attitude, and refusing to either, procrastinate, or seek, some easier path, when a step – by – step, methodical, well – considered, approach, is needed! With, that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, 6 – steps to becoming a better leader.
1. Analyze/ Review
Quality leadership requires fully understand obstacles, considering them, challenges (instead of problems), and having the combination of skills, and patience/ discipline, to fully analyze the full, bigger – picture, to ensure, one’s plan is focused on the priorities, rather than any assumptions, and/ or, the petty stuff. Once, this analysis, is fully performed, a true leader, proactively, reviews it, and proceeds, strategically, and with the best possible, action plan!
2. Consider options and alternatives
Once, the previous step, is performed, a real leader, thoroughly, considers all viable options and alternatives, with an open – mind! Simply, knowing one’s choices, doesn’t achieve, what’s needed, unless/ until, the leader is equipped to look at the bigger – picture, and choose, the best course, rather than, choosing, simply, the perceived path, of least resistance!
3. Relevant/ sustainable, instead of populist
One of the main causes, of the expanding, dearth, of genuine leadership, is far – too many, of those, who, are, either, elected, selected, and/ or, ascend to some position, are ready – for – prime – time! We witness lots of populist rhetoric, and empty promises, when we need, relevant and sustainable ideas, and focus!
4. Thorough, actual, strategic planning
Although, many organizations, claim, they perform strategic planning, often, it deteriorates into a combination of blaming and complaining, when the main purpose of this process, should be to fully consider, and examine, all viable options and alternatives, and, align them, with the mission, and vision of the group!
5. Fully considered/ developed action plan
For strategic planning, to be meaningful, and make a difference, for the better, it must be used, effectively, and lead – to, a fully considered, extensively – developed, action plan. This plan must include, both, a primary/ preferred approach, and contingency ones!
6. Leading group into future: Leading a group, into the future, making changes, when they create a difference, for the better, must be the objective of this process! What good, are the previous steps, unless/ until, they lead – to, these meaningful, needed, results?
How much, one wants, to be a real leader, for the right reasons, often, makes a significant difference, in the eventual results! Are you, up to the tasks?
